This group of walruses includes (clockwise from back left) Paul the Beanie Baby by Ty Inc., Waller the Walrus from Greenland, a member of the Coca-Cola International Bean Bag Collection, then Jolly the Beanie Baby, Wally Fishbreath of the Boyds Collection, and Wilcox, a walrus made by Russ Berrie & Co. Wilcox is one of the series of Luv Pets. Next to Wilcox is Whiskers the walrus made by Swibco. Whiskers is a Puffkin. Next is Ivory the Walrus made by MJC of its Cushy Critter collection, and last is Dakin's TheWyland Collection walrus. His glossy coat makes him look very real, doesn't it? The newest Walrus at Jeannie's Cottage is from Jaag Plush and he is at the far right.
These two walruses forgot to show up for the photo shoot and had to have their
pictures taken alone. These are Tusk the Beanie Baby and Teenie Beanie Baby. We have some walruses in our Gift Shop.
The Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) lives in Arctic waters. It is a very large seal; both male and female have tusks. Walruses are anywhere from 9 to 12 feet long and weigh from 1800 pounds (females) to 2700 pounds (males).
Walruses are social animals and live in groups. They are bottom feeders, living on clams, whelks, and sea cucumbers and other sea life that lives in sediments at about 230 feet below the water. They do not actually eat the shells, but can suck the meat from the shell.
Walrus have their young during the months of April through June. The gestation period is about 12 months. The calf will stay with its mother for about two years.
