Here are a bunch of Sea Turtles made by
various companies including, Douglas, Wild Republic, Bearington,
Ganz and Ty. Some of these are in our Gift
Shop.
There are about six species of sea turtle.
They belong in two families: Dermochelyidae, which contains the
Leatherback Turtle
(Dermochelys
coriacea) and Cheloniidae whose members generally frequent warmer
seas. The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) frequents the shores
of all continents. Its weight varies and individuals from 200
to 850 pounds have been reported.
Other members of the Cheloniidae family
include the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the Atlantic
Ridley (Lepidochelys kempi), Pacific Ridley (Lepidochelys olivadea),
Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the Leatherback (Dermochelys
coriacea). The Leatherback is huge, some turtles reaching 8 feet
and weighing over half a ton. Leatherbacks come ashore only to
lay their eggs. Several clutches are laid each year, each clutch
containing from 90 to 150 eggs.
Turtles belong to the order Chelonia.
