Here are two Sea Otters and two River Otters: at left is Potter the Otter from Jaag Plush, then there is Otto the Otter from the Bearington Collection, next is a little otter from Wild Republic that sounds like an otter when squeezed and last is an otter from the Stuffed Animal House. Potter and Otto are River Otters (Lutra canadensis)

The Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) is the smallest marine mammal but is the largest member of the otter family. It is about 40 inches long, the tail being another 10 inches. This little animal is almost completely aquatic, but comes ashore when the weather gets rough. It propels itself through the water with its broad hind feet. It spends all its life in the northern Pacific Ocean.

Sea Otters feed on abalone, squid, octopus and sea urchins. It carries its food to the surface and then, floating on its back, uses its belly as a table. It will crack open the shells by placing a flat rock on its chest and hitting the shell against the rock.Once hunted for their pelts, Sea Otters are now protected.

The gestation for both animals is up to 9 months. The River Otter has a litter of from 1 to 6 pups that are born blind and totally furred. The Sea Otter has only one pup, sometimes two, that is born fully furred but with its eyes open.

These little Sea Otters are from Dakin (retired), Ganz (a Soft Spot) and Ty Inc. (retired).
