The word Stegosaurus means "covered lizard" or "roof lizard." It was about 26 to 30 feet long and about 9 feet tall. It weighed about 6600 pounds. It had a small head with a tiny brain (about the size of a walnut) and a toothless beak.

Along its back were 17 large bony triangular plates and the tip of its tail displayed four-foot-long spikes. It walked on four legs. Scientists are not sure what purpose the plates played, but assume they were used to regulate body temperature, protection or mating displays. The spikes were probably for protection.

Additional discoveries in 1992 by Carpenter, et al, revealed bony scutes on Stegosauruses neck, hips and sides. These were probably also for protection

Stegosaurus was a plant eater.

It is assumed, considering the time in which Stegosaurus lived, that the possible predators would have been Allosaurus, Ceratosaurus, Marshosaurus, Torvosaurus, and possibly smaller meat-eaters such as Ornitholestes.

Stegosaurus lived during the late Jurassic Period.

Fossil remains of Stegosaurus have been found in many locations including North America (Utah, Wyoming, and Dinosaur Ridge, Colorado), western Europe, southern India, China, and southern Africa.
