The Norfolk Terrier was originally from the county of Norfolk; the breed was recognized in 1964 by the English Kennel Club. It became official in the American Kennel Club in 1979. This is one of the smallest terriers with a height of 10 inches. The weight is around 11 pounds. Despite its small size and short legs this dog has good substance and strong bones. The eyes are dark with a very lively expression. The ears are dropped and close to the cheeks. The tail is docked.

The hair is hard, coarse and straight and lies flat to the body. The colors are every shade of red, wheaten, black and tan or grizzle. The coat does not require trimming.

This little dog is feverishly active, courageous and affectionate. It is not a nervous or quarrelsome dog but can be stubborn. It has a steady, easy-going personality and is not yappy.

It was created by British sportsmen in the 1880s to attack wild game; it could enter the smallest lairs and dens and was perfectly capable of overcoming foxes, otter and rabbits. This little terrier makes an ideal house pet. They live well into their teens.

The Norfolk Terrier is similar to the Norwich Terrier, except the Norwich has pricked ears.
