These dogs are Dachshunds and you can see there are quite a few. Gretel, standing on the left next to the tote, and Spats (black and tan right) are
made by Douglas Cuddle Toys. The red Dachshund on the far right is a Pedigree Puppy made by Russ. There is a little black and tan Dachshund made by Aurora by the name of Vienna, two frames and two little Dachshund magnets. Some of these items are in our Gift Shop.
Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers. They originated in Germany. They love to eat so their weight must be watched or they will become overweight. Their characteristics are long body and short legs.
The standard breeds are about ten inches at the shoulder and there are three variations of coat: smooth, long-haired and wire-haired, which also occur in the miniature types. Of the three sizes, the normal size is about 20 pounds, the the miniature weighs about 9 pounds and the toy weighs about 8 pounds. The heights range from 5 to 9 inches. Colors can be red, black and tan or chocolate in color.
Considering their size, they are very courageous and proud; they are affectionate and friendly toward their masters.
