Bull terriers are very tough little dogs. They are courageous guards and are exceptionally good with children.

Their origins are in the 1830s when they were bred from bulldogs and Old English terriers in addition to some Spanish pointer blood. The idea was to breed a dog that could be used in the "sport" of combats between bulls and bulldogs.

Today the bull terrier is not the ferocious dog of the past. They can still be used as bodyguards or watchdogs but they make good companion dogs.

The bull terrier is about 21 inches high and weighs around 58 pounds.
