The Bichon Frise is a sturdy little dog and very compact. It is generally between 9 to 11 inches. It has a happy, playful temperment. It is affectionate and gentle.

Origins of the Bichon Frise breed are thought to be in and around Italy, where most of the Bichon breeds are found. The breed has been documented since the 14th century. They were used by traders as barter and were brought back from the Canary Islands by French sailors.

One characteristic of the breed is its powderpuff look. This is due to its double coat. It has both an undercoat that is soft and dense and an outer coat that is coarser and curlier. This is unique among the Bichon breeds

The Bichon Frise was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1981.

The eyes are black or dark brown in color and round. The nose is always black.

White is the acceptable color, but shadings of buff, cream or apricot around the ears or on the body are acceptable.
