The Basset Hound is a hunting dog and is descended from the Basset Artesien Normand of France, which was imported to England and there bred with the Bloodhound. (Basset is a French word meaning "low-slung.") It is used for hunting pheasant, hare, fox and opossum.

It is about 14 inches high and weighs around 45 pounds. It has dark, sad eyes. It needs a great deal of exercise. It can also be a good companion dog. It is friendly with its master and good with children.

Shown at top are some Basset Hounds living at Jeannie's Cottage. There is a Basset Hound Tote in the back made by Manual Woodworkers and Weavers. In front are, from left, a little Basset Hound Soft Spot from Ganz, Stubbsley the Basset from Douglas Cuddle Toys, Prince the Basset from Ganz and a little frame from E&S Imports and at far right is a little Basset from Fuzzy Town Plush.

You'll find several of the Basset Hounds on this page in the gift shop. The little Basset Hound at right is the Webkinz Basset Hound from Ganz, which is now retired.
