Zebras live on the grassy plains of Africa, from Ethiopia to the Cape of Good Hope. Zebras are members of the horse family Equidae. Some zebras are considered endangered. However, they readily breed in captivity, so there is still hope of keeping their populations in zoos and preserves.

Zebras are about 47 and 55 inches high at the shoulders. They can be identified by the dark stripes on their heads, bodies, legs, and tails. Burchell's zebra (Equus burchelli ), located from Ethiopia to South Africa, has lighter "shadow stripes" in between the main stripes.

Grevy's zebra (E. grevyi ) has very large ears, thin and closely spaced stripes, and a white belly. It lives in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya and it is the biggest species. The smallest species is the mountain zebra (E. zebra ) of the Cape of Good Hope and it has a strange gridlike pattern of stripes on the rump.

Zebras live in family groups that consist of a stallion and several mares along with their foals. When food is plentiful, Zebra groups may come together temporarily into large herds, but they still keep their group identity. Frequently zebras form mixed herds with other animals. It is the other animals who gain protection from predators by the zebras' very acute sense of hearing.
