Leopards are characterized by the rosette-like form of the black spots on the body, and by the absence of a central spot from each rosette. They vary in size but the usual length is from 6 to 7-1/2 feet including the tail.
They can be found in Asia and Africa. They are good hunters, using stealth and ambush. Usually they hunt at night. They will spring upon their prey from the bough of a tree. Leopards will eat any animal they can overcome.
Leopards (Panthera pardus) are the largest spotted cats of the old world, except for the snow leopard.
The name leopard was originally given to an imaginary animal, supposedly a cross between a lion and a panther. Later the name was given to the panther.
