Christmas is probably
the most widely celebrated holiday in the whole
world. But it has always had its critics. There are those who
complain that it is full of pagan traditions and rituals, that
Jesus was not born on December 25th, that the Bible doesn't tell
us to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It's too commercial and it's
lost its true meaning. With all the confusion, it's easy to become
depressed like Charlie Brown did in the TV special, "A Charlie
Brown Christmas."
It took Linus Van Pelt, a child, to
tell Charlie Brown -- and the rest of us -- the true meaning
of Christmas. Linus quoted this scripture from the King James
Bible:
"And there were in the same country
shepherds, abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock
by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and
the glory of the Lord shone round about them! And they were sore
afraid ... And the angel said unto them, "Fear not! For,
behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all
my people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David
a Saviour, which is Christ, the Lord."
"And this shall be a sign unto
you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying
in a manger." And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude
of the Heavenly Host praising God, and saying, "Glory to
God in the Highest, and on Earth peace, and good will toward
men."
That is what Christmas is all about.
And if God chose to celebrate the birth of His Son, why should
we be quibbling. Let's just celebrate it with joy and thanksgiving.
After all, what would this world be like if Jesus Christ had
never been born?
