Hi, my name is Corkey and I am a
Porcupine
made by the Boyds
Collection. Check the Gift
Shop to see if you can find me there.
We porcupines are large night dwelling
rodents. We eat buds, twigs and bark and some people think we
can be a serious pest. When threatened, we turn our back to our
enemy, raise our 30,000 quills, and strike out with our tail.
The barbed quills become embedded on contact.
The porcupine is a member of the family
Hystricidae, all members of which have the same protective covering.
Porcupines are about 20 inches long.
The porcupine shown at left is the crested
porcupine of Africa, southern Asia and southeastern Europe. Its
quills measure up to 21 inches in length. It weighs between 40
and 60 pounds.
