The Beaver is a large aquatic rodent of the family Castoridae. The New World Beaver (Castor canadensis) can be found in North America. It is about 3 feet long and weighs about 60 pounds. The tail is broad, flat and scaly and about one foot long.
Beavers like to inhabit lakes and streams bordered with poplars, birches and other food trees. They can dive and swim with ease, having the nose and ears provided with watertight valves. They are well known for the dams they build.
They are North America's largest rodent. Once their dam is built they live inside and emerge at dusk to look for plants to eat or trees to cut. In late summer and fall the cuttings they gather are stored in their lodge. They use this stored food during the winter. The kits (two to eight, usually four) are born in spring and stay in the home pond until they are two years old.
