These little guys also wears a mask but they are not Raccoons, they are Badgers. The one on the left is made by Coca-Cola and is one of the Cola-Cola International Bean Bag animals. His name is Badgey the Badger and he represents the Czech Republic. Next to him is a Badger made by Incredible Petables and the Badger on the right is from Aurora Plush. These are in our Gift Shop.

Badgers (Taxidae taxus) are tough little guys who are good fighters. They are members of the weasel or mustelid family. They can burrow very fast and do so whenever they feel threatened. They are more active at night and leave large holes where they have been trying to root out rodents, mainly ground squirrels. They are about 20 inches long not including the tail which is another 5 inches long. They inhabit dry, treeless areas.

The badger's young, anywhere from 2 to 5, are born between the months of February and May.

North American mustelids share a number of qualities. They are all fierce and solitary predators. They are also curious, playful and quite intelligent.
