Ladybug beetles are very popular insects and also very beneficial. Both the adults and the larvae feed on aphids and scale, two very damaging pests.

The larvae goes through four stages then pupates into the adult beetle. They are very small insects being only from 1/16 inch to 3/8 inch.

There are about 400 species in North America. They belong to the Coccinellidae Family.

The name comes from the Middle Ages when the beetles were dedicated to the Virgin Mary because of their insect-ridding capabilities.
