White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis)
is a 5 to 6 inch blue-gray bird, about the size of a sparrow, with white face and underparts and a black crown. The undertail coverts have some brownish red coloring. These little birds creep up and down tree trunks, head downward, looking for insects and their larvae. They also visit feeders. They are cavity nesters.
This bird is found throughout the United States but is missing from the Great Plains. The range is from southern Canada to southern Mexico. It is found in forested areas and builds its cup nest of twigs and grass in a natural cavity or bird box. The nest is lined with feathers and hair.
There are 5 to 6 white eggs speckled with reddish brown.
The little plush Nuthatch is made by Wild Republic and is part of their Audubon Bird Collection. Check the Gift Shop to see if we have any Nuthatches in stock.
