The Sharp-tailed Sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus) is about 5 inches long. It is found in the Canadian prairies and along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the US. It is basically a grey-brown bird with ochre markings on the face, breast and sides. The belly and throat are white. It has a grey ear patch.

Markings vary somewhat depending on its location. The Nelson's (Ammodramus nelsoni) is an inland prairie type that is not as streaked as other forms. It prefers salt marshes, muskegs and lakeshores. The cuplike nest is located in a marsh and made of coarse grass. The clutch is 4 to 5 spotted eggs.

Its song is a raspy, gasping trill.

The plush Sharp-tailed Sparrow shown above is made by Wild Republic and is part of their Audubon Birds collection. It has been retired. These birds are unique in that when squeezed they will utter their own particular call.
